    Professor Jim Carroll has a versatile background ranging from tours with Michael Jackson to Woody Herman and The Thundering Herd.  Jim received both his Undergraduate and Graduate training from Indiana University under the tutelage of David Baker and Eugene Rousseau.
  • Jeremy Freer

    Senior Associate Director of Green Machine Ensembles, CVPA

    Jeremy Freer is Administrative Faculty and is Associate Director of Green Machine Ensembles and works closely with Dr. Glenn Smith with the Music and Wellness program. He has taught Music in Motion Pictures, Popular Music Arranging, Jazz History, and Brass Techniques for the School of Music and teaches student arrangers, acoustic groups, photobombing techniques, and rock bands for the nationally acclaimed Green Machine.
  • John Healey

    Dr. John Paul Healey has served on the piano faculty of George Mason University’s School of Music since 2004.  Since then he has performed with students, faculty members and as a soloist in most of the performance venues on campus.  He has been included as an annual faculty presenter in GMU’s Piano Pedagogy Seminars since 2009.

    Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies, SAXOPHONE, Jazz Workshop, Jazz Studies, Jazz History, Dewberry School of Music, CVPA

    Saxophonist, composer, and educator John Kocur is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at George Mason University where he directs the Jazz Workshop and teaches jazz history and improvisation. He previously taught at Northern Virginia Community College. He serves as saxophonist with the 257th Army Band of the D.C. National Guard, “the Band of the Nation’s Capital.”

    Megan L. Lavengood, Ph.D. is Associate Professor and Director of Music Theory at George Mason University. Her research primarily deals with popular music, video game music, timbre, synthesizers, and recording techniques.

    We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Simon Prosser is the newly appointed Term Assistant Professor of Theory and Aural Skills at George Mason University, effective August 2023. Dr. Prosser previously served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Dr. Prosser holds the BA in Music from the University of Toronto (2010), the MA in Music from Indiana University (2012) and the PhD from the Graduate Center from the City University of New York (2021).
  • Kathleen Smith

    Adjunct Faculty, AURAL SKILLS and Graduate Theory Review, Dewberry School of Music, CVPA

    Dr. Kathleen Smith began teaching at George Mason in 2011. She received her masters and doctoral degrees in Music Theory from Florida State University where she was honored with a university-wide Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. She has served on the faculty of George Washington University, Northern Virginia Community College at Alexandria, and Shenandoah Conservatory.

    Adjunct Faculty, MUSIC THEORY, Dewberry School of Music, CVPA

    Dr. Noel Torres Rivera is a new adjunct music theory faculty member at George Mason University, teaching graduate analytical techniques in the Fall 2025 semester. Previously Dr. Torres Rivera has taught at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico.
