Impressive Spaces to Learn
Moving through the hallways of the Music/Theater Building on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University, you’ll hear vocalists rehearsing and instruments of all kinds coming to life. This spectacular space hosts smart classrooms, three rehearsal halls, and a sound design studio. Practice rooms and classrooms are illuminated by expansive windows, through which natural light streams in, and feature Steinway grand pianos kept in pristine condition.
In the Donald and Nancy deLaski Performing Arts Building, students connect with their peers and professors in classrooms and rehearsal halls, preparing for concerts in one of the many spectacular performance spaces across our campuses.
Beautiful Stages to Showcase Your Music
As a premier destination for the arts in Northern Virginia, the Fairfax campus Center for the Arts, featuring a 1900-seat Concert Hall, presents some of today's most talented artists, from promising students to internationally-acclaimed stars. Music student ensembles such as the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Jazz Vocal Ensemble, University Chorale, and many others perform here regularly.
The Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Science and Technology campus is in nearby Prince William County, which contains an 1100-seat Opera House and a 275-seat flexible theater. These buildings have all been renovated or built within the last ten years and each stage is equipped with the most up-to-date technology. Most recently, the hall played host to Mason Opera's production of Pauline Viardot's Cendrillon.
Completed in 2019, the new rehearsal wing at the Hylton Performing Arts Center adds 17,000 square feet of rehearsal and practice space.The Jacquemin Family Foundation Rehearsal Hall is part of the new wing and can host music rehearsals, recitals, and small ensembles. It is the precise floor size of the Merchant Hall stage, allowing for the staging of full-scale rehearsals and is fully outfitted with acoustic treatments with theatrical lighting and sound systems.
The 475-seat Harris Theatre, which reopened in spring 2022 after an exciting renovation can accommodate more intimate musical performances on the Fairfax campus.
A Cutting-Edge Music Technology Studio
The music technology studio combines cutting-edge digital technology with some of the best vintage equipment from the past. The studio acts as a teaching space, lab, and recording studio for the students enrolled in a Music Technology class or degree program. Students have access to a large catalog of equipment to use for their music making. The equipment installed in the studio are some of the key pieces of technology that shaped music from the 1960’s through to the present day.
