Recordings

Students Can Make Recordings of Their Original Work

Venues

Students can schedule MTB 2027 (Music and Theater Building) with Operations to make a recording using the specialized equipment. Students may also schedule with Operations the other, larger rooms (deLaski Performing Arts Building, Choral, and Band Rooms) or the Wenger modules in the Performing Arts Building, as they are available. If neither of these venues will work for your needs, students may make a request through the Operations office for reserving Grand Tier III (inside the Center for the Arts) during Box Office hours (Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 6 pm). Students using Grand Tier III will need to sign in and sign out at the Box Office and restore the space to its original layout when finished. Please allow a minimum of 1 week in advance for Dewberry School of Music spaces and 2 weeks in advance for Grand Tier III to schedule a recording. To avoid the sound bleed issue, schedule your session in the evenings for recordings done in the Performing Arts Building or Music Theater Building, during daytime hours for Grand Tier III, or use a Wenger module anytime.

Another recording venue that is available to all Mason students is the recording studio located at the STAR lab, located in the Johnson Center (JC 229). Their staffed studio is larger than our ensemble rooms and soundproofed, however they do not have a piano. You can reserve their studio for up to three hours. To make a reservation, students can either come to the lab, call (703-993-8990), or use the web checkout patron portal.

Support

Recording support will not be provided in any venue unless specifically requested. None is available in Grand Tier III.

Equipment

Only MTB 2027 is recording ready, otherwise students will need to bring their own recorders.

If you would like to rent a high-quality audio recorder or video camera, you can rent them for free at Mason’s STAR lab, located in the Johnson Center (JC 229). To reserve the equipment, students can either come to the lab, call (703-993-8990), or use the web checkout patron portal. Checkouts are for a maximum of 6 hours. Reservations can be made up to 14 days prior to checkout. The workers in the lab can train you on how to use the equipment so that you will not have to figure it out on your own.

Time Considerations

Students may schedule a recording only once a semester, for no more than 3 hours.

Piano Tuning

Tuning will be at the expense of the student.

If there are additional requirements/needs that cannot be met otherwise, special consideration would be made by the Director and may incur additional costs.
