Director or Orchestral Studies: Dr. Soo Han
The Mason Symphony Orchestra is comprised of outstanding string, wind, and percussion players from throughout the Dewberry School of Music, but is open for participation by all qualified musicians pursuing any major at George Mason University. A seating placement audition is required for all members.
The orchestra maintains an active performance schedule averaging 3 performances per semester to include an annual “Holiday Season Concert”, and a Music Scholarship Benefit Concert held the first Sunday evening in May. In addition to performing works from the standard orchestral repertoire, the Symphony Orchestra routinely performs with the university choruses, and occasionally features new works by student composers, as well as commissioned works by faculty and other composers.
Our Students Perform With Internationally Renowned Guest Artists
Guest artists and conductors from around the world have appeared with the orchestra. Among these artists are Maria Schneider (conductor), Leonard Slatkin (conductor), Doc Severinsen (late jazz trumpeter who led the band on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson), Allen Vizzutti (trumpeter), Leon Bates (pianist), Misha Dicter (pianist), Eugenia Zuckerman (flutist), Alessandra Marc (soprano), the late Eugene Fodor (classical violinist), Dailey and Vincent (bluegrass musicians), and the late William Warfield (bass baritone and actor).
