Practice Rooms

The Dewberry School of Music has 27 dedicated practice spaces located throughout the deLaski Performing Arts Building and the Music/Theater Building. Access to these rooms varies by degree and concentration.

Request Access

Current Mason students, faculty, and staff may request practice room access by emailing the Business & Operations Manager, Ellen Rizzuto, at erizzuto@gmu.edu. In your email, include your name, G number, and reason for your request.

We understand that practice room access is integral to the development of music students so your request will be responded to and submitted as expediently as possible. Please know that due to increased activity during the first three weeks of the semester, it may take up to two weeks for practice access to be activated after a request is submitted.

Practice Room Access Request Flow:

  1. Student emails School of Music Business & Operations Manager
  2. School of Music Business & Operations Manager approves request
  3. George Mason Security activates access

Practice Room Policies

Everyone with practice room access is expected to follow our Practice Room policies:

Room Occupancy and Courtesy

  • Practice rooms are operated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Practice rooms are in high demand - be conscientious that others need practice time as well. Please limit your time to active practicing only.
  • If a previously occupied room is left unattended for longer than ten minutes, another student may begin to the use the room (but please leave the previous student’s belongings in the room).
  • Please do not move music stands or mirrors to block the doors; this is a safety issue and can also lead to broken mirrors.
  • If you move a music stand to a different room, please return it to its original room afterward.
  • Turn off the light when leaving the room.
  • Make sure the door fully closes behind you when leaving the room.

Food and Drinks

  • No eating or drinking (except plain water) is allowed in the practice rooms, studios, classrooms, performance halls, or rehearsal halls.
  • Food and beverages that you are saving for later must remain in closed containers.
  • Bottles, boxes, cans, and other garbage/recycling should be disposed of in the appropriate receptacles.

Piano Care

  • Piano tops should be kept clear of all items including bags, water bottles, writing utensils, books, and other personal belongings. Only musical scores should be placed on the pianos.
  • Do not unplug the piano humidity control systems in the 2nd Floor PAB practice rooms. Please instead use one of the outlets on the provided extension cords.
  • Do not move the pianos.
  • Contact the Piano Technician with piano issues at eyorgov@gmu.edu.

Damage, Theft, and Security:

  • Practice room rule violations can be reported to the School of Music office.
  • Information about any person(s) responsible for damage or theft should be reported directly to the Director of the School of Music.
  • If you suspect that there may be an individual(s) that pose a threat to security of equipment or to the safety of an individual, report suspicious behavior to the Music Office at 703-993-1380, or the campus police at 703-993-2810. In an emergency, dial 911.

Thank you everyone for observing these practice room policies in support of your fellow musicians.
